Cognitive Hypnotherapy is a brief, evidence based, model of therapy that puts you at the centre of the treatment.
This problem and solution focused therapy, developed by Trevor Silvester, utilises the everyday trances we all experience, which are very similar to day dreaming, to access the unconscious mind and unlock the roots of the behaviours and habits that challenge our lives and cause us distress. By asking questions and using techniques to discover the range and depth of these difficulties, the therapist and client can work together to explore and re-frame them, allowing the mind to see things from new perspectives.
By being curious about how the mind works, and creating flexibility through recognising that no one therapeutic model is right for everyone, Cognitive Hypnotherapy is able to unite hypnotherapy with proven techniques from other disciplines. These include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Neuro-linguistic Programming and Positive Psychology. By doing so, it can to produce a model that offers each client a bespoke, individual programme of therapy that best suits the way they see the world.
We believe that whenever we are “doing” our problems; running away from a spider for instance, or being unable to speak in public, we are already in a trance state, where the unconscious mind has searched for previous similar experiences and then responded in the same way as before. These are often experiences that took place when we were very young and unable to fully comprehend and process the situation, but have since become embedded in our fight or flight responses which then take over our logical selves at times of stress. In an attempt to protect us, our unconscious mind then gets us to repeat those behaviours, even if logically we know that we don’t really want to, simply because they have seemed to keep us safe before.
Together we will look to re-frame these emotions so that in the future your unconscious mind will find new positive trance states to utilise instead. We believe you already have all the resources you need to overcome the challenges in your life.

Quest Cognitive Hypnotherapy (QCH) launched a unique research project in 2011. Using a team of QCH therapists, clients with anxiety and depression were assessed using the same outcome measures currently used to assess the effectiveness of talking therapies within the NHS. The pilot study was published in the Mental Health Review Journal in 2015. It recorded that, using 118 cases measuring the effectiveness of Cognitive Hypnotherapy for the treatment of depression and anxiety, 71% considered themselves recovered after an average of 4 sessions. This compared to an average of 42% for other approaches using the same measures (like CBT). To our knowledge, this is the only hypnotherapy approach to have been validated in this way. For further information concerning the research project and pilot study released in the Mental Health Review Journal please visit the evidence-based therapy research page.
Because we are all individuals, we will have arrived at our difficulties in our own way, even if the situations seem similar to those of others. When you come to see me we will look at your story and then develop an individually tailored therapy programme to help you understand the causes of your difficulties, and so the best way for you to overcome them - giving you back control over how you want your life to be. Through the use of a variety of techniques, including those involving light trance states, I will seek to help you to understand and re-frame your difficulties and enable you to make new choices about how to go forward with your life.
Next step? – As all my clients are individual and unique the best way for me to understand their needs is to talk with them, so simply call me on 07927 175164 for a chat about the issues that are concerning you or email me at
