Frequently Asked Questions
What is Hypnosis / a Trance State?
Anytime that you do something without full conscious awareness, you are in a trance state, for example being so absorbed in a book or a film that you lose track of time, or arriving home without being fully aware of the route you took. We all go in and out of these state every day and hypnosis just uses this unconscious ability to focus the mind to help us guide you towards your solutions but, like being able to stop reading whenever you want to, during hypnosis you will always be in control, you cannot be made to do or say anything that you don‘t want to and you will be able to stop at any time.
Can Anyone Be Hypnotised?
Everyone has the ability to be hypnotised as everyone experiences trance states every day without even trying. How you decide to use this ability within our sessions is always up to you; you can’t become stuck in a trance state as you are always in control.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Because everyone's needs are different the amount of time needed for change to occur will be different from person to person. However, the approaches used in cognitive hypnotherapy are designed to effect rapid change, and on average people come for 6 sessions. Flexibility is key, and I will work with you for as short or as long a time as necessary to help you with what you need to bring to therapy.
Can You Guarantee That it Will Work?
No - as with all therapies some people respond in different ways. Additionally, what would mean success for one person may not mean the same for another. However I will work with you to the best of my ability to achieve the goals that you want. The best results are obtained when we work together in an open and honest way so that we can continuously evaluate where we are and where we need to go.
Will You Keep My Information Confidential?
Yes - confidentiality is extremely important to me, as it is the only way to ensure we can build a trusting therapeutic relationship together. Apart from my own strongly held views I also adhere to the National Council of Hypnotherapy's Code of Ethics and the Code of Conduct, Ethics and Performance of the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council. You can see full copies of their codes on their websites.
